If you are new to the website design and building process, there will be many details that you are not familiar with. This page covers my most frequently asked questions about websites.
If your question isn’t answered here, please feel free to contact me.
What is involved in building a new website?
First up, we need to work out exactly what you need. That means defining what you want your website to achieve, who your target audience is and other design requirements. I run through a process with you to work this out.
When you are ready to go, I start work and keep in touch as the project proceeds.
You need to keep in mind that website content material will be needed. It’s usually just text and images and I can give you some guidelines. I can also help if you assistance with writing your content.
When the site is ready to launch I will provide familiarisation and training so that you can take full control.
What does a new website cost?
If you want a website that competes in an international market place, it will probably cost much more than you think. If you want a website that just introduces your team and your contact information it might less than you expect.
The price depends very much on what you need.
Which means a careful assessment of your goals so that I know where you want to get to.
It’s like a taxi cab. You pay for the distance you want to go.
(And the meter doesn’t start either, until you’re on board.)
When you know your destination I can give you a price.
How long does it take to design and build a website?
Generally you should allow a 2 to 3 month period depending on the size of the website. You will need to give yourself time for writing and arranging your content as well. The timeframe will be included in our agreement.
Can you write the content for my site?
People often need assistance with a text or image issue. Others ask for total support in preparing their content. I can help you with whatever level of assistance you require.
Can you help with website videos?
Yes, I can assist with all aspects of website video, from production through to website management and social media sharing.
Do you do e-commerce websites?
Yes. I also provide for those who want an online payment system without having a store.
What is a domain name?
The domain name is the internet business name, eg mine is geoffduffell.com.au.
There are rules regarding the use of different domain types. For example .com.au domain names must relate to a registered business name or a business activity.
If you don’t have a domain name I can arrange one for you.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting means storing your files and providing internet access to them. The hosting company runs special software to allow your pages to be available and correctly viewed.
During the setting up stage I will organise web hosting with your existing service or one of my preferred providers.
What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
SEO is based around the idea that the higher your site ranks in searches (through Google or other “search engines”) the more people will click on your site. SEO measures are included with all sites and higher levels of SEO can be tailored for your desired search outcomes.
What is a Content Management System (CMS)?
The CMS is the website module that allows you to easily manage your own content. It enables you to add, remove or modify your own text and images without being dependent upon someone else to do this for you.
Will my website work on a mobile device?
Absolutely yes. Mobiles are a major proportion of most site visitors so it’s necessary for websites to highly functional on mobiles.
Most needs are covered by designing the website to be responsive, ie automatically adapting to fit any screen. Some sites might require a separate mobile-specific site (as used by airlines for booking and checking in).
Do you provide training?
Yes. I give you training instruction and provide you with text and video resources that you can refer to later.
Can you help me with social media and email marketing?
Yes indeed. I can provide support if and when needed.
What area do you cover?
I am based in the Latrobe Valley, and geographically that’s my main area for face-to-face contact. However, I have done website designs for clients across Gippsland and further afield so my area is not limited.
What are the mini-websites you’ve been promoting?
Some businesses are focussed on mobile-only visitors. They only need a small website but require excellent SEO results to be prominent in searches.
This works particularly well for some businesses, but won’t suit everyone. There are many variations on the mini-website idea, but here’s the important thing: a thorough needs assessment should precede any decisions about the best website design.
Do you do the entire website by yourself?
That’s generally the case with smaller projects.
When you need more specialised or extensive results I will call on specialist colleagues to help with artwork, video, SEO, content writing or other functions. You get the benefit of my network of experts.
Who will be working with me during the project?
You will always be dealing directly with me.
